About Liesbeth

Liesbeth works as a visiting postdoctoral researcher at LT3, with her main affiliation at the Department of Computer Science, KU Leuven. Her current research project is "iTRUST - Interventions against Polarisation in Society for Trustworthy Social Media: From Diagnosis to Therapy", funded by FWO through CHIST-ERA call 2021 (2022-2025). In this project, she develops machine learning-based methods for detecting implicit patterns in social media text that signal misbehaviour such as hate speech and fake news. Specific attention is given to social grounding of content.

Previously, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher within the ERC-AdG project CALCULUS, focusing on commonsense and anticipation enriched learning of continuous representations supporting language understanding (2024). During her PhD, she joined the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (IT) as a doctoral researcher within the ML4Disinformation project on machine learning models for the verification of information and detection of disinformation (2020 - 2021). She visited the CopeNLU group at the University of Copenhagen (DK) within the Multi3Generation COST Action (2020).

She obtained her PhD in Engineering Science: Computer Science at KU Leuven (BE), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Marie-Francine Moens (2024). The title of her PhD thesis is Machine Learning Models for the Verification of Information and Detection of Disinformation.

Liesbeth holds a M.Sc. Artificial Intelligence (2019) from KU Leuven (BE), M.A. Multilingual Communication (2017) and B.A. Applied Linguistics (2016) from Ghent University (BE). During her studies, she visited the University of Limerick (IE, 2015).
