WASSA 2021

Yesterday, the Eleventh Workshop on Computational Approaches to Subjectivity, Sentiment and Social Media Analysis took place online as part of EACL 2021.

Orphée and Veronique were two of the workshop's co-organisers. In total 30 papers were presented at the workshop, the proceedings have been published in the ACL anthology. In the afternoon an invited talk on "Using language to study emotional contagion" was presented by professor Lyle Ungar.

LT3 presented four papers:

• An overview paper of the shared task on predicting empathy and emotion in reaction to news stories of which Orphée was one of the co-organisers.
• Cynthia presented work on implicit sentiment analysis that was carried out in the framework of the NewsDNA project.
• Both Luna and Olha presented work on emotion detection as part of their ongoing PhD research. Luna explored whether transformer models and effect lexica can be efficiently combined for Dutch emotion detection whereas Olha zoomed in on nearest neighbour approaches for emotion detection in English tweets.
