About Janiça

Janiça Hackenbuchner is a PhD student in the LT3 Language and Translation Technology team at Ghent University, where she is researching on gender bias in machine translation. Her work is being supervised by Joke Daems and Arda Tezcan. She co-hosted the 1st International Workshop on Gender-Inclusive Translation Technologies at the European Association for Machine Translation in 2023. She is co-founder of DeBiasByUs, a platform to raise awareness of and create datasets for gender bias in machine translation, which arose at a Goethe-Institut hackathon in 2021. She was operational lead of the DataLitMT project, where she developed learning resources for teaching data literacy in the context of machine translation literacy. She holds an MA in Specialised Translation from Cologne University of Applied Sciences, and a Bachelor in Sciences from Amsterdam University College.
